June Gin Dr. Gin manages the Disaster Resilient Organization (DRO) program at the Fritz Institute’s Bay Area Preparedness Initiative in the San Francisco Bay area. She works closely with community-based organizations in the DRO program, providing technical assistance and support to develop the capacity of critical safety-net service providers to respond to the needs of vulnerable populations in disasters. The DRO program’s objective is to develop a standardized framework for mentoring nonprofit service providers in achieving a set of concrete preparedness milestones, which will ultimately facilitate their ability to signal their abilities to prospective partners. Dr. Gin is leading the research and knowledge development project of the DRO program, distilling information from interviews and best practices into learning to develop a replicable framework for application across communities. She received her PhD in environmental sociology from the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan. Her research expertise focuses on nonprofit organizations, land-use planning in low-income communities, and neighborhood resilience amid change. Her doctoral research focused on capacity-building processes in neighborhood organizations engaged in advocacy on land use, affordable housing, and gentrification concerns. She conducted fieldwork in the San Francisco Bay area involving ethnographic observation with 12 community organizations located in the Mission District and West Oakland neighborhoods. She has previously worked as a political reporter for the Capitol Weekly newspaper in Sacramento, California, and as a consultant for Ecosecurities, a firm specializing in carbon emissions trading systems. Dr. Gin earned an MA in Public Policy from Claremont Graduate University and a BS in Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning from UC Davis. Previous • Next Speaker Bio
