Knouss has been Director of the Office of Emergency Preparedness since April 1996. After receiving his professional training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the University of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals, he entered the U.S. Public Health Service and served as the Chief of the Physician Education Branch, National Institutes of Health, and Director of the Division of Medicine in the Health Resources Administration, both positions related to the education, supply, and distribution of medical manpower. Dr. Knouss has also directed the Public Health Service's Refugee Health activities during the Cuban-Haitian entrant and Southeast Asian refugee crises. After serving as Deputy Director of the Pan American Health Organization for ten years, he returned to the Public Health Service as Executive Assistant to the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health. Previous professional activities include being a staff member for the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources. |
