Mary Beth Hansen, MA
Chief Information and Administrative Officer

Ms. Hansen is Chief Information Officer at the Center for Biosecurity of UPMC. She is responsible for strategic planning for information management and technology and for defining the Center's policies and procedures for information management. She is Managing Editor of the Center’s website and an editor of the Clinicians’ Biosecurity Network (CBN). Ms. Hansen supervises the work of the Center’s administrative, IT, communications, and events staff, and she manages many of the Center’s administrative operations and systems.

Since joining the Center in 2004, Ms. Hansen has focused on refining administrative systems, fostering a team approach to administrative support and functions, and encouraging skill development. She has also worked to reorganize and strengthen the Center’s IT and web systems to enhance design, functionality, content management, and information dissemination capabilities. Ms. Hansen directed the redesign, launch, and back-end retooling of both the CBN and the Center’s main website. Most recently, she developed a new architecture for the Center’s website, directed the development of a new graphic design, and the adoption of a content management system, all in anticipation of the launch of a new site in early Fall 2006.

Ms. Hansen has supported the development of several new projects for the web, including the Biosecurity Briefing, and the production of online versions of Center conferences and other initiatives. Most recently, she led the team that designed, developed, and produced Atlantic Storm: Interactive, an online, multimedia version of the 2005 Atlantic Storm exercise.

Prior to joining the Center in 2004, Ms. Hansen worked for the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) as Publications and Grants Administrator for the Center for Technology in Education in the School of Professional Studies in Business and Education from 2002 to 2004, and as Manager of Print and Electronic Publications for the Division of Infectious Diseases and AIDS Service in the School of Medicine from 1996 to 2002.

While with the JHU Division of Infectious Diseases, Ms. Hansen was Managing Editor of The Hopkins HIV Report, a newsletter published 6 times per year for a subscriber base of more than 17,000. She was also Managing Editor of Medical Management of HIV Infection and the Abbreviated Guide to Medical Management of HIV Infection, two highly respected guides to AIDS clinical care that were published annually and distributed to more than 70,000 people in 70 countries. Ms. Hansen was also Managing Editor of the Johns Hopkins AIDS Service website, one of the first websites in the JHU School of Medicine designed to deliver educational materials to healthcare professionals. She directed the netcast of numerous JHU Infectious Diseases conferences and events, including the netcast of the first and second National Symposia on the Medical and Public Health Response to Bioterrorism in 1999 and 2000.

Ms. Hansen attended Towson State University, from which she received a BS in Psychology in 1983 and a BS in English in 1990, and she received a Master’s degree in English in 1995 from Morgan State University.
