Hospitals swamped amid flu fears: As anxious patients force emergency rooms to adapt to the crowds, officials fear the system would be overwhelmed if the outbreak became severe, by Noam N. Levey. Los Angeles Times.
Dr. Richard Waldhorn acknowledges that hospitals across the United States are more prepared to deal with a surge in patients, "Very real progress has been made." He also noted that there are gaps remaining in preparedness that would challenge hospitals were the outbreak to worsen.

Toner and Waldhorn of the Center for Biosecurity, and quotes Dr. Toner: "There are so many variables that can't be known until a pandemic starts. . . The best you can do is come up with an initial game plan that has to be modified."
