Mission StatementThe Center for Biosecurity is an independent, nonprofit organization of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). Our mission is to strengthen national security by reducing the risks posed by biological attacks, epidemics, and other destabilizing events, and to improve the nation’s resilience in the face of such events. To that end, our multidisciplinary staff fosters sound policies and effective practices by conducting innovative research and analysis that: - elucidates the strategic threat posed by biological weapon attacks, large-scale epidemics, nuclear detonations, and other mass casualty disasters;
- identifies key challenges in prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery across all levels of the public and private sectors;
- promotes the responsible use of increasingly powerful bioscience and biotechnologies;
- advances the development of new technologies, medicines, and vaccines; and
- improves global public health and security.
